“Ft. Kent, Maine- In the potato fields and timber stands of far northern Maine, an adventurous plan is taking root to revive Nordic skiing.
Financed by $6 million in grants from a Maine philanthropy-with more to come-a group called the Maine Winter Sports Center dreams of growing a crop of Olympic champions... Shepard and Cobb hatched the idea for the Winter Sports Center on a plane ride. With Olympian John Morton, now a noted Nordic trail designer, the three developed a scheme of creating a world class training center that would produce Olympic biathletes and Nordic skiers. Thanks to a Maine philanthropy, the Aroostook County proposal took on an even grander scope... ‘I really believe that in 2006 there’ll be a member of the Olympic team from Aroostook County,’ Shepard said. ‘That’s our goal.’”
