When I began designing trails back in 1990, I assumed that most of my clients would be commercial ski centers. Through the years, I have been pleased to discover that the market for well designed, enjoyable trails is more diverse than I anticipated. In addition to the Nordic and Alpine ski areas I expected, four other general categories have emerged.
Often a specific event will stimulate the creation of a new trail; something as public as the hosting of a major competition, or as personal as memorializing a beloved community member.
Schools and municipalities are discovering what tremendously versatile recreational assets trails can be, the construction of which often qualifies for government funding.
A surprising number of private landowners are looking for a safe and physically stimulating opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of their woodlands.
And finally, although my competitive experience is primarily Nordic skiing, I have been asked to design trails suitable for running, hiking, walking, snowshoeing, mountain biking, horseback riding, and motorized sports.
